Job SummaryTeachers of Mandarin at Concordia International School Shanghai are charged with the responsibility of helping students acquire and improve Chinese language ability by using effective instructional practices that meet the needs of students learning their mother tongue of Chinese or Chinese as an additional language; communicating student progress with parents, working in collaboration with team members to develop and deepen curricular units; participating fully in the required activities of the school; and supporting the learning and social development of all students with a high level of professionalism.RequirementsEducation[Required]
  • Bachelor degree in Chinese Language Literature or Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language
  • Chinese national teaching certificate
  • Prefer Chinese national citizen
[Desired]
  • Degree in Chinese Language Literature preferred
  • Master degree in education is a plus
Experience[Required]
  • Minimum of four years school setting classroom teaching experience, not tutoring
  • High degree of fluency in Mandarin is required, preference given to those who are also fluent English speakers
[Desired]
  • International school or overseas teaching experience preferred.
Skills[Required]
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • General computer skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
[Desired]
  • Familiarity with student database systems (Aspen)
  • Familiarity with U.S. educational system
  • Fluency in Mandarin
Remuneration & Terms of Service
  • The salary is determined by the salary scale for PRC Mandarin teaching staff.
  • Mandarin teachers can apply for a yearly grant to be used for administrative approved professional development activities and supplies.  With administrative approval, two yearly grants can be combined if the professional development activities take place in the summer between the two years, if the teacher is under contract for both years. The grant does not accumulate yearly.
  • Teachers are expected to be on campus from 7:45AM to 3:45PM during regular school days, until the end of the CCA when leading an activity, and until 5:00PM on professional meeting days.
  • Teachers are on duty all student contact days plus workshops, conferences, pre and post school year workshops and in-service days.  Teachers are not expected to work through the summer school break, nor holiday breaks in the academic calendar, except for the pre-determined in-service days.
  • Leaves are granted, with administrative pre-approval, based upon Concordia’s leave policy unless mandated by Chinese Labor Law.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Use in-depth knowledge of content and Concordia curriculum outcomes, students, pedagogy and resources to design coherent instruction

  • Gather data through assessments and analyse and review student work to provide a clear, recursive, rigorous, relevant and rich curriculum

Pastoral Care
  • Respond to students’ emotional and social needs
  • Model interpersonal skills, respectful relationships and problem-solving, in order to provide a safe learning environment
Instruction
  • Deliver developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students; Use a variety of questioning and discussion techniques to engage students in learning
  • Provide differentiated support and instruction to ensure that students develop understanding of content and apply skills.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students
  • Implement best practice in instructional strategies
Assessment
  • Assess student learning. Plan and administer a variety of appropriate diagnostic, formative and summative assessments
  • Analyze and use the data provided by the assessments to guide instruction.

  • Addressing the needs of the whole child is an important part of our ethos and a Concordia teacher embraces opportunities to work with students beyond the classroom.
  • Contribute to the school and community by participating in one or more student activities outside of the classroom. Teachers lead or assist with an after-school activities/clubs, coach, and/or direct artistic performances in order to provide students with a variety of opportunities to widen their interests and develop alternate means of self-expression.
  • Participate actively in off-campus educational field-experiences
