Position: Head of English Department (HOD, Grade 9-12)

Line Manager: Head of high school

Working location: Wuxi/Suzhou city, China

Responsibilities:

Heads of Departments lead the learning and teaching in their Departments. They occupy a vital place in the management and organisation of the School. They are expected to foster enthusiasm for and achievement in, their subject in pupils and department staff, and to strive constantly to maintain and improve standards of achievement. They advise the academic management on curricular and policy-making developments relating to their subject area beyond the School. Subject co-ordinators take responsibility for specific grade levels.


• To provide a role model of exemplary teaching within the department.


• To plan, implement and review the curriculum within the framework of the School's declared aims and objectives and in accordance with guidance from external sources.


• To allocate teachers to classes in liaison with heads of school.


• To provide teachers with a comprehensive Scheme of Work for each subject within their remit.


• To oversee teaching within the department through the coordination of schemes of work and the publishing of a comprehensive departmental/subject Handbook.


• To ensure the effective monitoring of student performance within the subject area(s).


• To be responsible for all assessments conducted internally within the subject area.


• To ensure that students' work is regularly assessed and their achievements recorded centrally.


• To manage the ordering, storage and use of materials, equipment, books, etc. in association with School Management.


• To support members of the department who may have problems with individual students or classes.


• To hold regular departmental team meetings to encourage collaborative working


• Curriculum planning:

  • to have open discussions with staff on lesson planning.
  • to ensure horizontal planning occurs within grades.
  • to ensure vertical planning occurs within department.


• To implement all published school policies.


• To monitor and check the suitability of examination materials.


• To ensure that the department's teaching area presents a stimulating learning environment.


• To supervise the use and care of all teaching spaces assigned to the department including adherence to relevant health and safety regulations.


• Appraisal and Staff Development

  • To conduct regular lesson observations of staff.
  • Conduct review of members of the department every year.
  • Advise and guide department members, particularly probationers or newly qualified teachers, and, whenever possible, give staff the opportunity to take on responsibility
  • Ensure all department members keep abreast of current educational developments and encourage their personal development
  • Participate in the selection, appointment, review and appraisal of departmental staff
  • Prepare for the Director of Studies, at the beginning of each academic year, a projection of likely staff development needs arising from the Development Plan and the appraisal of members of the department.

Required:

  • Master degree in the teaching related.
  • Familiar with IB/IGCSE/A-level/AP program
  • 10+ years teaching experience in international/bilingual schools.

Salary Range:400-700K/Year
