The Tianjin Juilliard School (TJS) is the first branch of an innovative initiative within this global objective. Approved by the Ministry of Education in China, TJS is ready to welcome its first class of pre-college students in the 2019 academic year, and the graduate class in Fall 2020. The Master of Music degree is a New York Juilliard degree. By equipping its musicians with core educational values and cultivating experiences, TJS, along with its dedicated world-class faculty, intends to take on the challenge of guiding aspiring artists on the path to achieving their full potential not only as musicians, but also as global ambassadors. Through a combination of highly selective graduate and pre-college programs, community-based open enrollment courses and inspiring performances in a state-of-the-art facility, TJS is to become an educational and cultural landmark in the Asia-Pacific region.

Role Description 
 
The Interim Assistant Dean of Student Development oversees the provision of advisement and pastoral care to students' personal and professional development. This position collaborates closely with other departments reporting under the Dean's Office to create a synergy in delivering the student experience in keeping with the School's educational philosophy and ethos. Providing leadership and oversight to the Offices of Residence Life, Mental Counseling and Wellness, as well as Career Services, Outreach and Alumni, this position builds partnerships with local community resources to provide medical care, treatment programs and counseling support to students, and oversees the development and implementation of programming to sculpt a campus culture and encourage student success.
 
Responsibilities

• Provides advisement to students relating to personal and professional development; issues of student conduct; referral of services as available.

• Develops comprehensive student programs that promote student leadership, personal development, health and wellness, cultural competency, and social responsibility and building a general climate of inclusion, working in collaboration with internal departments. 

• Oversees Residence Life, hires, supervises, and evaluates staff. Oversees documentation of Residence Life policies, procedures, and protocols.

• Oversees Mental Counseling and Wellness programs, working in collaboration with partner medical facilities to manage student-related medical, psychological and other emergencies. 

• Oversees the Office of Career Services, Outreach and Alumni; hires, supervises, and evaluates staff; supervises the development and implementation of community engagement and alumni programs.

• Oversees the management of student services such as visa-related matters, collection of student health records, maintenance of student records, student finances and insurance

• Supervises management of the student internship program and oversees payroll of student interns

• Works with the Admissions/Enrolment Management teams to provide leadership and support in the School's audition and orientation programming and retention initiatives.

• Designs and recommends strategies, including the implementation of appropriate technology, for expanded and improved student services, assessment and reporting.  

• Oversees the development and maintenance of departmental contents in TJS website, intranet and Student Handbook.

• Supervises the planning, scheduling and implementation of new student orientation in collaboration with other functional departments

• Oversees compliance and integration of the student conduct process with local laws, School policies and applicable policies in U.S. higher education, grievance procedures and policies relating to student behavior.

• Serves as a Student Conduct Administrator investigating and adjudicating alleged code of conduct violations. 

• Serves on the School's behavior intervention and threat assessment committees, including communication with parents, students, faculty and staff with regard to student welfare.

• Plans and manages the fiscal resources of the Student Development departments.

• Maintains an understanding of current ideas, trends, research, technology, and practices pertaining to student services and student development through study and participation in professional organizations, conferences, and workshops.
 
Qualifications

• A Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in student developmental services/personnel, student services, counseling, higher education administration, educational leadership or related degree is strongly recommended.

• A minimum of Five (5) years of full-time student affairs administrative experience at an accredited college or university is highly desirable. A minimum of two (2) years should be at a level equivalent to a Director or an Assistant Dean or higher in student affairs administration. 

• Work experience in a joint-venture Chinese/US academic program is preferred. US applicants should have had extensive academic or work experience in China. Applicants should have an understanding of what Student Services looks like in both the US and China. 

• Demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of student development and educational administration.  Firm understanding of current student services practices and related People's Republic of China and US higher education law.

• Understanding of and commitment to EDIB (equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging) and the mission of The Tianjin Juilliard School.

• Successful record of administration including assessment, strategic planning, goal setting and the ability to manage systemic change

• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, a collaborative management style, innovative thinking, technological vision, strong service orientation, energy, enthusiasm, and demonstrated ability to lead staff.

• Demonstrated experience and success working in a multicultural environment with a clear understanding of and sensitivity to the issues of diversity in both student and workplace settings. 

• Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment and maintain confidentiality.

• Must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and work successfully with all constituencies of the School.

• Good project management and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated experience using a personal computer, office software such as MS Office and college administrative computing systems.

• Bi-lingual fluency in English and Mandarin is preferred. 

• A deep appreciation for and some educational or professional background in the arts is preferred. 

• The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check.
