Position Summary
The Manager of Residential Education / Residence Hall Director is a full-time staff position that serves as the primary point of contact for residential students, overseeing their well-being, academic support, and community development within the university's residence halls.
This position will manage the Resident Assistant (RA) program and oversee the residential experience for all residential students. The manager will recruit candidates for the RA position, design training, and provide year-long support to Resident Assistants. The manager will ensure top-quality programming, student support, and create living-learning communities that further the university's educational missions and are conducive to students' academic pursuits.
The position is responsible for the holistic supervision of an assigned residence hall, including the direct oversight of a team of Resident Assistants (RAs). This position plays a key role in both Residential Education and Housing Operations, ensuring that students have access to robust residential programs, resources, and services that enhance their overall university experience.
Additionally, the role supports room changes, Move-in and Move-out coordination, damage billing, facilities management, and special housing accommodations to maintain smooth housing operations.
The main responsibilities include:
Campus Living Support (50%)
Develop, maintain, and manage the Resident Assistant (RA) and Summer Assistant (SA) program;
Serve as the Residence Hall Director for assigned halls, supervising 10–20 Resident Assistants (RAs);
Have regular meetings with RAs and conduct RA performance evaluations and/or job action;
Assist Resident Assistant All-Staff Meetings and lead individual Residence Hall meetings;
Develop and facilitate RA/SA selection and training processes;
Manage all aspects, including recruitment, selection, training, and supervision, of the Residential Life (Resource Center) Student Workers;
Provide holistic supervision of the residence hall; supporting students in the building, handling all facility-related issues, and hearing tower-specific conduct cases;
Work with the Facilities and Campus Safety team to ensure the building preparation and annual maintenance projects are taking place;
Collaborate with on- and off-campus residence hall management teams to ensure housing facilities are well maintained;
Supervise the residents' summer storage project and stored belongings delivery process;
Assist the transition to a new residence hall including designing a new RA program, launching housing applications and managing housing facilities, etc.
Residential Education (20%)
Attend all Residential Education meetings and all staff meetings;
Assist on any Residential Education projects as necessary;
Improve Residential Education digital images and materials;
Work to improve the overall level of programming and marketing. Encourage collaborative and cross unit programs;
Oversee assigned residential hall programming; Support the short-term program in the Residence Hall; Supervise SAs to complete relevant summer projects to enhance the resident living experience in the Residence Hall;
Establish relationships with faculty members to support residential programming.
Office Administration (20%)
Communicate regularly with the Facilities and Campus Safety team and provide updates and feedback to the Office of Residential Education;
Manage Residential Education financials through Workday;
Receive incoming student questions and offer general assistance to students;
Support campus partners through serving on committees and providing support for various Residential Education and/or Student Affairs initiatives;
Provide administrative support to other Residential Education Staff members as needed.
Crisis Response (10%)
Handle student crisis situations during office hours as needed;
Interpret university policies and guidelines;
Ensure the proper training and performance of the RA team to handle crisis response;
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education
Minimum Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred in a related field.
Required Experience
3-5 years' work experience, non-profit or higher education experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Fully proficient in both written/spoken English and Chinese;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work in an international and cross-cultural environment;
Good problem solving and time management skills;
Proficiency in using computers, databases, social media and comfortable with learning new technology.
