Job Description
:Provides support to business unit
Provides legal support and handles legal matters relating to a specific area/country, including but without limitation to customer and vendor contract drafting, review and negotiation, procurement and vendor selection support, license maintenance, labor and employment, litigation support, real estate legal matters, corporate secretarial etc. Responds to day-to-day questions from business units to provide advice in discrete areas and to support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Provides guidance to business unit management to assist the business in resolving disputes and to ensure consistent, appropriate, and cost-effective handling of legal matters. Has responsibility for specific areas or projects (e.g. vendor contract reviews, real estate requests, marketing support) including deliverables and timelines. Performance is measured against satisfactory accomplishment of project deliverables. Provides relevant training and coaching for appropriate employee groups. Reviews and provides advice from a legal perspective on communications (e.g., customer communications, employee communications, etc.) to reduce and eliminate legal risk in communications. Gathers facts, conducts analysis, explains facts, issues and provides legal analysis to the business units Works with other Attorneys to provide support for cross-functional initiatives that require legal input.Manages matter specific legal affairs
Evaluates factual circumstances surrounding legal matters (e.g., course of events, causes of violations, agreements, etc.) to gain a better understanding and to ensure accuracy of the facts. Reviews pertinent documentation to determine the rights and obligations of involved parties (e.g., UPS, UPS employees, government agencies, plaintiffs, defendants, etc.). Reviews laws, policies, and regulations applicable to legal situations to frame possible outcomes and to determine a position for UPS that best serves and protects the company. Identifies process improvement initiatives for the legal department, sets objectives and delivers results that have direct impact on the department’s ability to support the business. Assists negotiation of resolutions to establish solutions for involved parties and to protect UPS. Documents legal resolutions to provide written records for involved parties.Manages Legal Expenses
Assesses upcoming projects and activities to determine legal resources required and associated costs. Develops business plans and budgets to determine feasibility of planned projects and activities. Monitors open matters and costs-per-month and year-to-date to identify and address budget discrepancies. Reviews law firm invoices to verify completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness.Manages Legal Activities of Outside Counsel (OC)
Coordinates with OC in the representation of the company’s position to ensure a consistent, accurate, and complete explanation and defense of UPS’s legal position. Collaborates with OC in developing strategies for cases to ensure matters are resolved appropriately and in a cost-effective manner. Assigns Attorneys from OC to ensure expertise is appropriately matched with specific legal matters. Collaborates with OC to identify and correct areas of non-compliance and legal risk for the company. Manages OC to keep them on plan and on budget.Job Requirements
A law degree from a reputable university in China. LL.M degree and/or experience in Hong Kong is a plus. PRC Bar qualification. Minimum 3 years of relevant legal experience in law firm and/or in corporate legal department. Good communication and interpersonal skills and able to interact with different levels of people. Matured personality with good sense of professionalism. Fluent in both Chinese and English.
