At Canonical, the Device Delivery Team collaborates with leading OEM and ODM partners to integrate Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core, delivering Ubuntu to a vast user base.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will oversee and guide the software engineering team in executing OEM enablement initiatives. This dynamic role demands exceptional time management skills, extensive knowledge of Linux systems, proficiency in low-level debugging, and strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, inspire, mentor, and empower your team to achieve excellence in product delivery.
  • Establish team objectives; prioritize tasks and assess team performance metrics.
  • Enhance team member productivity and support their professional development.
  • Coordinate efforts with project managers, hardware engineering, quality assurance, and certification teams.
  • Oversee projects from initiation to completion and manage escalations effectively.
  • Engage with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs, and IHVs to understand and resolve technical challenges.
  • Prioritize global customer requests efficiently.
  • Collaborate with product engineering teams across various domains, including Desktop, Foundations, Kernel, and Security.
  • Provide leadership in methodologies, strategies, standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM field, ideally in computer science or software engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical roles involving Linux, particularly Ubuntu or Debian.
  • Strong commitment to development and testing methodologies, ensuring high code quality.
  • Experience in management roles.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined, capable of thriving in a globally distributed team.
  • Dedication to meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in English and Chinese, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience making technical decisions as a team lead.
  • Background in software architecture and design.
  • Hands-on experience with Ubuntu - both kernel and userspace, as well as deb/snap packaging, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Containers, Python, Go, C, bash, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and AI/ML.
  • Involvement in open-source development projects.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices.
