Linux Systems Enablement Lead

At Canonical, the Device Delivery Team collaborates with leading OEM and ODM partners to integrate Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core, making Ubuntu accessible to millions of users worldwide.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will oversee and guide the software engineering team in executing OEM enablement projects. This dynamic setting demands exceptional time management, comprehensive knowledge of Linux systems, low-level debugging expertise, critical thinking, and effective problem-solving capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, inspire, mentor, and empower your team to achieve excellence in product delivery.
  • Establish objectives with the team; prioritize assignments, and identify and assess team performance metrics.
  • Enhance the productivity of team members while supporting their professional development.
  • Coordinate efforts with project managers, hardware engineering, quality assurance, and certification teams.
  • Oversee projects from initiation to conclusion and manage escalations effectively.
  • Engage with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs, and IHVs to understand and resolve technical challenges.
  • Prioritize global customer inquiries.
  • Collaborate with product engineering teams across various domains, including Desktop, Foundations, Kernel, and Security.
  • Provide leadership in methodologies, strategies, standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM field, ideally in computer science or software engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical roles involving Linux, preferably Ubuntu or Debian.
  • Strong commitment to development and testing methodologies, ensuring maintainable code quality.
  • Experience in management roles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-discipline and motivation to thrive in a globally distributed team.
  • Dedication and energy to meet project deadlines.
  • Proficient communication skills in English and Chinese, both written and verbal.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience making technical decisions as a team lead.
  • Background in software architecture and design.
  • Experience in software development or operations with technologies such as Ubuntu (kernel and userspace), deb/snap packaging, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Containers, Python, Go, C, bash, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and AI/ML.
  • Involvement in open-source development projects.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices.
