Position Summary:

The English-Medium Librarian is responsible for the development, daily management, and long-term growth of the whole-school library, with a particular focus on Secondary School library services. This role combines professional library administration with instructional responsibilities, including teaching library-related classes and supporting English literacy across Grades 7–9. The librarian is a member of the English Language Department (ELD) and contributes to the Middle School Reading Program, supporting both emerging readers and high-achieving students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Library Management & Development Lead the development, organization, and smooth operation of the whole-school library, with emphasis on the Secondary library build-out.

2. Prepare and conduct regular reporting meetings with Senior School Leadership Team (SSLT) outlining planning, progress, data, and upcoming actions.

3. Develop, maintain, and annually review all library policies and procedures for students, staff, and teachers; ensure SSLT approval and publication at the start of each academic year.
4. Manage the circulation of library resources, including cataloguing, inventory checks, recovery of missing/damaged items, and accurate record-keeping.
5. Ensure proper shelving, storage, and maintenance of all materials.
6. Conduct regular weeding and removal of outdated or unsuitable resources.
7. Oversee cataloguing of new English-language resources and coordinate with Chinese Medium Language (CML) staff for Mandarin-language resources.
8. Lead annual and ongoing procurement of textbooks and library materials (English and Chinese), ensuring timely ordering, budgeting compliance, and coordination with Academic and Procurement teams.
9. Process and prepare new materials for use; repair damaged items as needed.

10. Operate and support the use of the ACCESSIT library management system (or any system designated by School).

11. Library User Support

12. Assist students, teachers, and staff in locating and using resources effectively.

13. Support users in developing proficiency with online library tools and digital literacy.
14. Promote library use through displays, events, activities, and reading campaigns.
15. Supervise students using the library before/after school, during breaks, and at other times scheduled within the school duty roster.

16. Train and supervise Student Library Assistants and any assigned staff.

17. Teaching & Academic Support

18. Plan, teach, and assess library-related classes and information literacy lessons.

19. Teach English-related or reading-support lessons as appropriate to the Library remit.
20. Be willing and able to teach Middle School English classes (Grades 7–9+) as required by the school.
21. Support the Middle School Reading Program by:
22. Assisting lower-level readers with structured reading support.
23. Extending and challenging high-achieving readers.
24. Tracking student reading data and collaborating with English teachers.

25. Actively contribute as a member of the English Language Department (ELD), attending meetings, participating in planning, and fulfilling departmental requirements.

26. School-wide Collaboration & Contribution

27. Prepare materials and displays that promote library engagement.

28. Support whole-school literacy initiatives and contribute to curriculum-aligned reading programs.
29. Lead and participate in school events and extracurricular programs, as assigned by SSLT.
30. Conduct an annual library audit at the end of each academic year to ensure accurate closing procedures.
31. Undertake reasonable additional responsibilities assigned by the line manager to ensure consistent service and emergency support where needed.

Qualification and Experience Required:

Essential

• Bachelor's degree or above.
• Recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, Educator License, TEFL/TESOL with classroom experience).
• Ability and willingness to teach Middle School English (Grades 7–9) when required.
• Strong fluency in English (native-level or equivalent proficiency).
• Demonstrated experience working in libraries, with strong understanding of library operations and management.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Familiarity with educational technology and library management systems.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Understanding of basic pedagogy and adolescent learning needs.

Preferred Advantageous

• Professional librarian certification.
• Experience in bilingual or international school settings.
• Experience supporting literacy programs or English language learning.
• Knowledge of children's and young adult literature across cultures.
