Main Objectives of the Role

Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel will be a business partner to the Group's Asian different businesses as well as being part of the local management teams . He/she will:

Act as trusted impartial advisor, protecting and enhancing the Group's commercial endeavours in the Asia Region, objectives, and shareholder value by giving timely and appropriate legal advice; Deliver critical, timely and commercially focused support to the business's contracting capability, making the contracting processes and other legal processes more harmonized in the Asia Region; Ensure effective legal risk management, reducing exposure to reputational risk and ensuring an ethical and compliant approach to business; Manage external counsel and high profile legal issues across the Asia Region; Act with integrity at all times when closely with the Business. Keep a track of the local legal and regulatory environment and provide timely advice and support on emerging risks or opportunities. Be a driver of change and an advocate for good compliant processes. Working as part of a small, but highly capable team, driving the efficiency and effectiveness of legal/risk management both regionally and across the Group; Acting with integrity at all times and working closely with the Business Heads to ensure an ethical and compliant approach to business; Proactively with confidence and credibility keep key stakeholders, including the Group Company Secretary & General Counsel, informed on emerging trends, developments and practices relevant to the Region, and influence change to meet these developments; Working with the businesses to develop and enhance their ability to do business in a safe and effective way; Selecting and effectively managing external counsel ensuring that they are engaged at the appropriate time and are effectively managed to maximise value; Manage the Asia Region Legal budget; and Reporting to the Associate General Counsel regularly and succinctly on key matters/issues.

Education and Experience

Qualified lawyer, with at least 6 years PQE, preferably from a combination of an international law firm and inhouse experience; Experience of working for international businesses in international matrix structures in a fast-moving environment; First class legal skills with a proven track record of applying these in a commercially effective way; Extensive business partnering experience; A proven track record of successfully drafting and negotiating high value, high risk international contracts; Knowledge of and experience of applying competition laws to the world of commerce; Experience in M&A activities including setting up and dealing with joint Ventures;

Skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to be competent in the role including:

Fluent in English and Mandarin with very strong communication skills; Needs to be proactive self-starter who is used to working under their own initiative to get things done; Demonstrates a high degree of strategic thinking with direction and a clear vision of 'what could be' through a deep understanding of the needs of the business; An ability to identify and focus on the key commercial/legal issues and to make clear recommendations on how to deal with these; Able to join up legal and commercial issues and support the business in reaching appropriate risk weighted solutions to complex contractual/legal issues; Able to cut through complexity and propose pragmatic yet innovative solutions to difficult problems; Demonstrates the ability to be a skilled influencer across the organisation, promoting Legal in a commercially astute ways; Ability to work effectively to strict timescales managing multiple projects and delivering on commitments in a fast pace environment; Demonstrates drive and resilience as well as a flexible can-do attitude; Highly organized and efficient self-management; Delivery focused and a problem-solving mentality; and Must be prepared to travel regionally.
