Overview

R&D Materials Engineer is expected to satisfy the specific needs of new alloy material roll-outs in the production processes; assess viability of Aluminum sheet related technology, process or method within technical discipline to find innovation and integration in the manufacturing and application.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Principle Accountabilities

Technical Expertise

Possesses specialized knowledge of scientific or engineering principles, theories and concepts in a narrow technical discipline to analyze problems, devise hypotheses, and determine approach for conducting analyses Possesses broad knowledge of other technical disciplines; Integrates knowledge of a variety of disciplines to independently address problems in more complex process areas Ability to assess viability of a technology, process or method and perform sophisticated analysis of complex data to make recommendations as to the best application for a site based on business needs Independently addresses problems of moderate complexity. Expanding knowledge of other technical disciplines or process areas Takes responsibility for work within established objectives.  Innovate new techniques or processes File invention records, cited in IP filings, recognizing opportunities for IP

Project Leadership

Fully competent in project management tools/principles Proposes, justifies and leads complex projects for a site or complex segments of larger projects impacting multiple sites/region/global Meets assigned project commitments, demonstrating an understanding of project timelines and deliverables Responsible for setting own priorities or those of other technical staff, as well as balancing multiple priorities across multiple projects or service group requests

Communication

Clearly communicates complex technical information or results effectively to colleagues, external suppliers, plant employees and customers Participates in gathering of customer (internal or external) requirements and feedback. Effectively presents technical information to peers or superiors in the scientific community; persuasion of others to trial new ideas in labs/pilot lines. Deliver data, reports, and communication to project stakeholders Participates in regular review meetings with co-workers on joint projects. Identifies and communicates best practices and methods to others

EHS

Utilizes equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards SME for EHS concerns related to a specific process(es), laboratory(ies), or functional area(s) so as to ensure consideration of EHS in design/adoption of techniques and equipment

Technical Decision Making

With guidance, determines priorities and, with consultation, may deviate from established procedures as long as results meet standards Provides data or results with detailed interpretation as to validity of results and recommendations as to next steps Understanding and assessing risks associated with a course of action, able to make a decision with limited information Considers multiple aspects in project developing (. customer, economic, operating, technical) in area of responsibility Responsible for leading research and development of product or process effectively

Qualifications

Education

Master’s degree or above in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering a directly related field

Experience

Entry to this level typically requires 3 years of relevant experience - profound expertise in the field of metallurgy, especially wrought Aluminum product development Project management experience with multiple projects

Functional Competencies

Knowledge of physical metallurgy and experience of wrought metal manufacturing Fully competent career professional with broad understanding of the relevant principles, theories, and concepts within metallurgy (Aluminum) area of specialization Profound experience of materials characterization techniques (SEM, EBSD, EDS) Good communication skills and advanced English language
