Shenzhen, China Dyson Full time

About Us

Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better.

We push the boundaries of what others have defined as possible. Our approach starts with an engineering mindset and different thinking. Then we continuously refine our ideas - unwilling to compromise and driven by an obsession for finding a better way.

Our new product teams take radical innovative ideas and develop them into reality. They explore the limits of our technology and optimise it through relentless experimenting, testing, and iterating. They then develop new ways to test and evaluate performance, to accurately position our technology against our competition.

About the role

Design Engineering are agile, creative thinkers who are deeply passionate about great design and disruptive solutions. We take pride in turning product concepts into robust, manufacturable designs, working on individual parts, assemblies, and entire products. Challenges fuel our enthusiasm, and we firmly believe in our problem-solving abilities, always striving to make Dyson products the best they can be.

As an Associate Principal Engineer in the Design Engineering function based at our Shenzhen office in China, your primary role will be to collaborate with Dyson internal teams and ODM/JDM partners to ensure the successful delivery of mechanical designs and product integration. Drawing upon your technical expertise and leadership skills, you will ensure the quality and timely delivery of work produced by our development partners in a cost effective manner. Your influential recommendations and decisions will contribute to the development of user-focused solutions that align with design and project goals.

Responsibilities

Requirement management: Identify and manage assembly requirements and subsequent changes, ensuring alignment with architecture and traceability to product requirements, and clearly defining interfaces with other assemblies. Ensure that ODM/JDM correctly interpret and implement requirements throughout the development phases.  Planning and reporting: Collaborate with Dyson internal teams and ODM/JDM to identify dependencies, risks and mitigation strategies within design engineering context. Assess, plan and align activities to achieve design and project goals. Monitor and report on progress to stakeholders. Manage project scope changes by providing well-justified proposals for resource and schedule adjustments.  Technical management: Oversee the development of mechanical engineering solutions by our ODM/JDM teams, including the integration of electrical parts. Drive an efficient way of working for design reviews and issue management, ensuring solutions follow robust engineering principles, comply with Dyson quality standards, and are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner.  Build evaluation: Evaluate the build process to confirm its effectiveness and efficiency in achieving design and project goals. Assess the quality of build outputs against the requirements, ensuring they meet the established standards.  Test evaluation: Provide technical guidance in test planning and the development of test methods. Drive the execution and reporting of testing activities, ensuring that the tests are conducted properly and results are accurately documented.  Design maturity assessment: Assess the results of design iterations, such as performance metrics, Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and lessons learned, to evaluate design maturity level and guide future design iterations.  Change and Part Approval: Review and approve Change Request, Part approval or Deviation Request, ensuring the estimated efforts, risks and benefits are satisfactory before proceeding.  ODM/JDM engagement: Understand and evaluate the ODM/JDM partner's design and manufacturing capabilities in achieving the design proposal. Provide subject matter expertise in Request for Information (RFI), Request for Proposal (RFP), Request for Quotation (RFQ), Master Service Agreement (MSA) and Scope of Work (SOW) processes, facilitating informed decision-making.

About you

A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent.  Strong knowledge and application of Systems Engineering, Requirements Management, and Risk Management in product development.  Strong understanding of product development methodology. Proven ability to scope development work, decompose complex problems into manageable tasks, plan work based on need, and eliminate non-value-adding activities.  Established track record of developing robust engineering solutions from concept to market launch. In-depth knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques for plastic injection molding, metal stamping, die-casting, rubber parts, along with working knowledge of motor and pump. Capable of challenging tool makers, molders, and assembly suppliers on their technical proposals and driving improvements.  Skilled at estimating the cost of various design options and selecting the most cost-effective direction. Practical knowledge of 3D CAD, PLM systems, and analysis packages.  Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities using a variety of methodologies.  Strong leadership abilities with a track record of influencing others to successfully deliver results on time. Experience in collaborating with ODM/JDM partners, demonstrating resourcefulness and maintaining trust and credibility.  Excellent communication skills with stakeholders at all levels, both written and verbal, in English and Chinese. Willingness to travel approximately 25-30% of the time.
