Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Battery Materials Development Engineer to join our team in Houston, TX. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the commercialization of our lithium products by applying their expertise in battery materials development, including cathode making and testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct laboratory studies to evaluate the performance of EM lithium products, including characterizing product through relevant analytical techniques, formulating cathode active materials, developing coin and pouch cells, and executing cell performance tests.
  • Perform statistical data analysis for cathode & cell quality and develop property-process-performance relationship models for different Lithium products with cell performance.
  • Engage with customers at a technical level to understand the relationship between customer specifications and their CAM/Cell performance targets.
  • Leverage cell and "Voice of Customer" data to determine direct and interaction effects of EM Lithium products under evaluation and execute root-cause analysis of failures and appropriate modifications to the Lithium product specifications.
  • Guide R&D towards developing new, improved products based on laboratory studies and external insights.
  • Engage with external community in the field of battery materials science.
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for components and assemblies.
Requirements
  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Electrochemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • +5 years working experience in the development and testing of cathode material such as LFP, LMFP, NCA, NMC etc, fabrication of coin and pouch cells, cell testing, and electrochemical data analysis.
  • Good understanding and experience of cathode materials and of their electrochemical performance e.g. ac impedance, cycle life testing.
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in design and development of components and assemblies for lithium-ion battery.
  • Competency in the Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) process.
  • Experience in design and development of batteries/cell (and ideally lithium-ion cells).
  • Familiarity with Statistical Analysis and Design of Experiments (e.g. Minitab) preferred.
  • Working experience with Quality & Reliability disciplines (APQP, 8D,...).
  • Hands-on experience with developing technical specifications for components and assemblies.
  • Has worked with moisture sensitive materials in a glovebox or dry room, and has cell teardown and failure analysis experience.
  • Experience in working with battery researchers.
  • Familiarity with lithium materials supply chain players.
