Position Overview

The Mechanical Product Engineer (PEM) will spearhead the design of mechanical systems for All-Wheel Drive (AWD) applications. Although the PEM does not have direct reports, they will play a pivotal role in guiding an engineering team through the product development lifecycle. This encompasses collaboration with specialists in CAD, CAE, NVH, and other areas, as well as engagement with teams involved in sales, program management, engineering project management, ECU, controls, calibration, customer applications, assembly, manufacturing, prototype and production purchasing, and quality assurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and execute engineering tasks related to the product development cycle for AWD mechanical components, from initial business opportunities to production rollout. This includes:
    • Assessing customer specifications to ensure product performance, packaging, and serviceability standards are met while resolving any outstanding issues.
    • Creating proposals for mechanical components and aiding in the estimation process for new business ventures.
    • Conducting mechanical hardware system design.
    • Providing guidance for CAE/NVH requests as necessary for the analysis of assemblies and components.
    • Leading a team in the development and upkeep of mechanical hardware assembly/system level DFMEAs.
    • Managing the development and tracking of ADVP&R's.
    • Issuing lab work orders and directing builds, tests, component modifications, and inspections.
    • Facilitating and leading meetings, including design kick-offs, issue resolutions, design releases, prototype builds, and root cause analyses.
    • Formulating engineering specifications for the product.
    • Establishing prototype build/control plans, reviewing and approving prototype materials for builds, and authorizing mechanical hardware prototypes for internal and external testing.
    • Leading investigations into root causes and devising solutions for mechanical systems issues.
  • Provide engineering support throughout the product development process, which includes:
    • Assisting the PM/EPM in securing program development.
    • Collaborating with ECU, software, and calibration engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electrical systems.
    • Supporting validation engineers in preparing necessary fixtures and fulfilling testing requirements.
    • Providing engineering data for estimates to sales, including opportunities for cost reduction, and offering technical information for customer interactions.
    • Advising the production facility on DFM/DFA activities and serving as a technical resource throughout the product lifecycle.
    • Supporting the global supply chain organization as a technical advisor for sourcing decisions and discussions.
    • Assisting quality engineers in resolving production challenges.
    • Participating in the engineering budget for programs.
    • Leading or assisting in the engineering change management process for supported products as necessary.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering is required, along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in transmission systems and 3 years in xEV products being advantageous. A comprehensive understanding of e-Axle or electrical/hybrid powertrain development is essential, as well as experience in drivetrain development. Proficiency in NVH skills is a plus, and mastery of NX is beneficial. Familiarity with Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is expected, along with excellent communication abilities in both written and spoken English.
