Position Overview

The Mechanical Product Engineer (PEM) will spearhead the design of mechanical systems for All-Wheel Drive (AWD) applications. While the PEM does not have direct reports, they will play a pivotal role in guiding an engineering team through the product development lifecycle. This role encompasses collaboration with team members responsible for CAD, CAE, NVH, and more. Additionally, the PEM will engage with various stakeholders, including sales, program management, engineering project management, ECU, controls, calibration, customer applications, assembly, manufacturing, prototype and production purchasing, as well as quality and warranty.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and execute engineering tasks related to the product development process for AWD mechanical components from initial business opportunities to production launch. This includes:
    • Assessing customer requirements to ensure the product aligns with performance, packaging, and serviceability standards while addressing any outstanding issues.
    • Formulating proposals for mechanical components and aiding in the estimation process for new business ventures.
    • Conducting mechanical hardware system design.
    • Directing or issuing CAE/NVH requests as necessary for the analysis of assemblies and components.
    • Leading a team in the creation and upkeep of mechanical hardware assembly/system level DFMEAs.
    • Developing and monitoring ADVP&R's.
    • Issuing lab work orders and providing guidance for builds, tests, component modifications, and inspections.
    • Facilitating and leading meetings, including design kick-off, open issues, design release, prototype build, root cause analysis, and others as required.
    • Drafting engineering specifications for the product.
    • Creating prototype build/control plans, reviewing and approving prototype materials for builds, and authorizing mechanical hardware prototypes for internal and external testing.
    • Leading problem-solving efforts for root cause investigations and solutions related to mechanical systems.
  • Provide engineering support throughout the product development process, which includes:
    • Assisting the PM/EPM in securing program development.
    • Collaborating with ECU, software, and calibration engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electrical systems.
    • Supporting validation engineers in preparing necessary fixtures and fulfilling testing requirements.
    • Providing engineering data for estimates to sales, including opportunities for cost reduction, and technical data for customer interactions.
    • Assisting the production facility with DFM/DFA activities and serving as a technical resource throughout the product lifecycle.
    • Supporting the global supply chain organization as a technical resource for sourcing decisions and discussions.
    • Collaborating with quality engineers to resolve production issues.
    • Participating in the engineering budget for programs.
    • Leading or assisting in the engineering change management process for supported products as necessary.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering is required, along with:

  • 5+ years of experience in transmission engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience with xEV products is advantageous.
  • A strong understanding of e-Axle or electrical/hybrid powertrain development.
  • Experience in drivetrain development with beneficial NVH skills.
  • Proficiency in NX is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.
