The Legal Affairs Department is recruiting volunteers on a rolling basis.
The Legal Affairs Department is responsible for the governance of the organization's headquarters and national offices, participating in the development of internal policies and overseeing their implementation, managing and controlling legal risks, and providing day-to-day legal service support.
Members of the Legal Affairs Department are assigned to the US, UK, and Belgian national offices to handle local matters. The Department currently has a shortage of volunteers for legal services in national offices.
Tasks- Help to maintain effective governance of the organization; design the governance structure; draft and revise governance documents; and assist the Board of Directors and the Charity Secretary in conducting legal research on governance
- Help the organization complete entity registration in multiple countries and ensure that national office operations comply with local regulatory requirements; help prepare and submit annual reports and other disclosures or filings required to maintain registration status under multiple jurisdictions; and maintain communication with regulatory authorities
- Assist in drafting and revising internal policies, covering data compliance, intellectual property rights, financial management, volunteer code of conduct, external cooperation, etc., and oversee their implementation
- Conduct internal compliance due diligence from time to time; conduct quality control of the work of the Legal Support Division as requested
- Provide legal advice to the Board and management
- Assist other departments, including participating in and providing legal advice on the work of other departments, and drafting and reviewing contracts and other legal documents
- Assist in dispute resolution
- Liaise with law firms and coordinate external legal counsel
- Be enrolled in or graduated from elite universities and/or law schools, and as a principal the applicant should major in law or have a degree in law; applicants who do not major in law but intend to study or have been admitted to a law program may participate in the training program on a case-by-case basis
- Have work or internship experience in reputable law firms or legal departments of major corporations
- With excellent grades and strong learning capacities; be intellectually interested in complex legal issues; be proactive in work; with good teamwork skills
- With outstanding legal research and analysis skills
- English as a working language; ability of French or other languages is preferred; understanding of Mandarin is preferred but not a must
- Professional qualifications in New York, England, Belgium or other jurisdictions are preferred
- Applicants with a time commitment of >7hrs per week and >3 months are preferred
- Certificates of volunteering and internship
- Letter of recommendation from the founder, director-general, board members, or advisors (including professors, international organization experts, attorneys, etc.)
- In-sourcing opportunities with program partners
- Experience handling complex legal challenges across four jurisdictions (PRC, UK, US, EU)

- Complete the NY bar pro bono hours requirement
