Job Summary
The Laboratory Technician will provide critical support for laboratory teaching courses and assist in maintaining, developing, and operating the laboratories of NYU Shanghai as directed. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Laboratories.
Main Responsibilities
Lab Course Support (50%)
- Assist in the preparation of laboratory courses, including preparing lab equipment, materials, and supplies as requested by the lab teaching faculty.
- Be on-call when lab courses are in session and provide emergency response support for instructors in the event of accidents.
- Set up and maintain laboratory equipment, check and calibrate lab equipment on a regular basis.
- Cleanup laboratories after the course and maintain labs in a safe and organized status at all times.
Lab Safety (10%)
- Take sufficient training and certification in safety and become qualified for related lab operations.
- Participate in safety trainings, operations, and audits as needed.
- Maintain laboratory safety equipment, including eyewashes, extinguishers, and first-aid kits, and ensure safety equipment is functional and fully supplied.
- Observe laboratory operations and bring any security and safety concerns to the attention of the Director of Laboratories.
Facility Work in the Lab (20%)
- Collaborate with Facilities and Property Management for infrastructure problems.
- Interface with ATS for teaching technology problems, updates, and new installations.
Lab Operations (20%)
- Take charge of small infrastructure and facility upgrade projects.
- Interface with end-user Procurement, Facilities, Property management team, and vendors to proceed projects and meet the requirements of end-users.
- Interface with Public Safety, EHS, Risk Management, and other internal departments for lab-related matters.
- Perform other relevant lab support duties.
Qualifications
Required Education
- A bachelor's degree in a natural science is required.
Required Experience
- At least 2 years' experience in laboratory work is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient in both written and spoken English and Mandarin.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to work in an international and cross-cultural environment.
- Good problem-solving skills, and good time management skills.
- High professional integrity and honesty.
- Well-organized, diplomatic, detail-oriented, and service-oriented.
- Knowledge/experience in project management, lab facilities are a plus.
