Job Title: Science Laboratory Technician

Western Academy of Beijing is seeking a highly skilled and organized Science Laboratory Technician to join our team in the Science Department.

Job Summary:

The Science Laboratory Technician will be responsible for coordinating the use of practical resources and facilities, providing assistance in meeting the practical needs of the sciences curriculum, and ensuring the smooth and safe operation of science labs and activities.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Communication:
    • Establish and maintain clear and regular communication lines with the MSHS Science Laboratory Technician Supervisor.
    • Assist in the training, development, and supervision of trainee technician staff.
    • Ensure the essential performance standards are achieved.
    • Assist in the delivery and supervision of student experiments as required.
  • Team Work & Collaboration:
    • Contribute to the assessment, monitoring, and review of both health and safety procedures and information resources.
  • Service Excellence:
    • Stay up-to-date with current Occupation Health & Safety procedures and practices through continuing professional development.
    • Contribute to the maintenance of resources.
    • Address any emergency that may arise in the laboratory.
  • WAB Fit:
    • Demonstrate an understanding of WAB's mission, vision, and core values.
  • Attention to Detail:
    • Ensure the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to actual or potential hazards.
    • Ensure healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.
    • Ensure that routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing, and repairing of equipment are done to the required standard.

Person Specification:

The successful applicant is expected to have the following skills, abilities, knowledge, and experience:

  • Qualifications:
    • Science-related degree, preferably Biology, Chemistry, or Physics streams.
    • Knowledge of chemistry and handling/storage of hazardous materials preferable.
    • Knowledge of Occupation Health & Safety practices when managing science laboratories preferable.
  • Experience:
    • Experience within a research/laboratory science-related organization.
    • Experience in preparation, handling, and storage of hazardous materials preferable.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Excellent written and oral English language skills.
    • Excellent organization and multitasking skills.
    • Ability to prepare chemicals preferable.
    • Computer literate, competent in Excel, Microsoft Word.
    • Familiar with Vernier DATA LOGGER Software is preferable.
    • Pleasant personality and positive communications and interpersonal skills.
    • Positive learning attitude and dedication to organizing equipment.
    • A willingness to learn new skills.
    • Ability to positively work within the Science department and to develop positive working relationships across the school.
