- Support global marketing and trading activities for CCA Base Metals (Nickel, Cobalt, Lithium, Manganese), including strategy, marketing, trading and global projects to serve BASF’s battery materials business and its customer requirements.
- Collaborate with the Head of Battery Base Metals, China to support the Base Metal Services business required for BASF’s joint ventures and plants globally for battery materials:
1. Metal Market Knowledge – suppliers, capabilities, capacities, value chain, pricing, and other topics
2. Key Account Management – develop and maintain account plans for both JV and external accounts, through deep understanding of their value chain and business need. Includes the account strategy and engagement plan. Successfully build and maintain the key account relationship.
3. Business Development – manage metal customers mainly for lithium and nickel, including but not limited to BASF’s JV and external customer relationship building, spot/term contract negotiation, volume/price management, and quality issue coordination.
4. Trading Development – building innovative trading models to capture the geographical and tolling conversion arbitrages.
- Provide input into special projects that build out BASF’s global value chain for battery minerals and battery materials manufacturing.
Main Tasks:
1. Regional
- Implement procurement, sales, and trading strategy effectively and meanwhile able to manage JV and external customers expectation from a business need perspective. Able to own metals business segments independently and have strong capabilities to conclude the deals with customers.
- Market and business opportunity analysis for CCA Base Metals (Nickel, Cobalt, Lithium, Manganese), mainly Lithium and nickel in China market.
- Build and maintain relationship with the suppliers (mainly lithium and nickel), PCAM/CAM producers, Cell manufacturer and OEMs.
- Work closely with commercial managers from internal JV (BASF ShanShan Battery Materials (BSBM)) to exchange the market view and explore business opportunities in a regular basis.
- Understand the physical transaction and price risks for lithium and nickel and provide the daily guidance to operation/supply chain desk.
- Work closely with derivative trader to mitigate price and spread risks of physical transactions.
- Sit in on regional CCB customer meetings to give battery metals market view etc
2. Global
- Communicate daily/weekly market news and price movements through the following channels:
- CCA Weekly markets update
- CCB monthly metal markets deepdive
- Regular updates to CCA Regional and Global head
Education
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in economics, Finance, Business Management, Science/Engineering; knowledge in chemistry/engineering would be a plus
Working Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience from lithium marketing, procurement or trading – ideally have experience for both lithium and nickel
- Proven track record in high learning agility environments
- Familiarity with all facets of a trading operation would be beneficial.
- Culture:
- Demonstrated strength in establishing and maintaining senior level relationships with internal management and external partners (joint ventures, suppliers etc).
- Ability to work in a matrixed environment to build organizational alignment.
- Communication and Influencing:
- Fluent in English and Mandarin with good written and verbal communication skills
- Interact with, and influence key people both within the company and externally, through superior communication and strong interpersonal, negotiation and presentation skills.
- Travel: Willing and able to travel up to 50% of the time, locally and internationally as required.
