Coatings Application Expert

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with sales and marketing teams to identify problem statements based on market trends and customer needs.
  • Lead the creation of innovative application-focused solutions utilizing Michelman technologies within the coatings technical team.
  • Design and execute complex product development experiments at the laboratory level, either independently or collaboratively.
  • Acquire a comprehensive understanding of coatings application techniques and performance assessments to facilitate the development of new concepts.
  • Iteratively create new product prototypes by preparing lab-scale batches and evaluating them against market-relevant success criteria.
  • Thoroughly document all experiments, analyses, and testing outcomes.
  • Ensure timely communication of project-related information and results to company stakeholders.
  • Plan, initiate, and manage projects following the Michelman project management framework.
  • Deliver both written and verbal reports on technical findings to business and technology leadership.
  • Foster effective collaboration with the global technical team to promote a culture of idea sharing and knowledge transfer.
  • Enhance your expertise by creating clear and accessible user guidelines for Michelman's products, both as ready-to-use solutions and as additives for formulation with other materials.
  • Provide technical assistance during customer trials.
  • Facilitate internal discussions to keep colleagues informed on relevant product and application developments.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the situation.

Essential Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical and observational skills.
  • Hands-on experience in developing waterborne products, additives, or formulations for coating applications.
  • A proven history of innovation, technology scouting, or process/product prototyping is highly advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of various substrates used in coating applications and the methods for applying coatings.
  • Experience with stage-gate project management and the associated documentation requirements.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing business priorities while managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop new laboratory methodologies to address technical challenges and train others in their effective application.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Education and Experience

  • A Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer/Materials Science, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
  • Practical experience in developing waterborne materials or formulated products is a plus.
