Job Summary

Cummins Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Application Engineer to join our team. As an Application Engineer, you will be responsible for integrating Cummins products into customer vehicles, developing technical specifications, and implementing new design configurations.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate and resolve integration and installation issues, understand cause-and-effect mechanisms, and propose appropriate measures.
• Develop and implement high-performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customer products in various applications.
• Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to integrate high-quality and optimized customer solutions.
• Seek input from subject matter experts and Value Package Introduction (VPI) teams, and provide product data and installation requirements to application engineers and OEMs.
• Make decisions on product selection, design, and integration that impact OEM machine performance, optimization, and quality.
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with customer technical departments, providing product technical information, managing product specifications, and conveying product changes.
• Apply deep product, application, and market knowledge to support OEM product selection and device design.
• Translate customer needs and concerns into product functional requirements.
• Act as an internal customer/market supporter during new product development programs, design audits, and product change request processes.
• Ensure correct product application and installation to meet customer system requirements and environment.
• Verify prototype machine performance to ensure installation quality and compliance with Cummins regulations.
• Develop problem-solving solutions for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services as experience is gained.
• Independently execute established workflows and systems, developing technical or product knowledge, and participating in system and process improvements.
• Participate in basic direct personnel management, but may coordinate and guide technical personnel and/or temporary student workers.
• Effectively promote team goals, influence workgroups, and continuously improve the skills necessary for success in the role.

This entry-level/early-career professional, dual customer/product-focused position serves as the technical liaison between OEMs and represents our customers during new product development programs. Applying Cummins products to customer vehicles requires the development of technical specifications, implementing new design configurations, and delivering high-performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customer products in a variety of applications. Integrating high-quality and optimized customer solutions requires the interaction with sales and marketing teams.

The goal of the application engineers is to relentlessly pursue improvement and alignment in our processes and practices to ensure Cummins provides best-in-class installation support to OEMs supported by our Global entities. This role will also strive to ensure that global and regional market needs are visible to the Cummins organization, such that we can maximize the market opportunity for Cummins Engines. This includes the options available on the products we offer, as well as the OEMs expectations in the services we provide. This role will cover all on-highway productions and markets.

Responsibilities

Skills:

Human-Machine Optimization - Combine different components or subsystems into a whole to achieve the customer's desired result; apply Cummins' installation requirements using our standard tools, processes, and best practices to ensure optimized performance, reliability, cost, and quality; use validated problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques to analyze technical problems and quickly resolve them.

Machine Operation and Support - Monitor system performance, resolve system failures or performance issues, respond to changing user demands and technical changes, and evaluate user operation of the system; actively and systematically respond to operational issues that significantly impact user satisfaction and operating costs.

Product Application Support - Ensure the availability of new product information by developing and managing accurate and complete technical content, support our customers and business, manage technical system support for all markets to provide new choices, and determine installation requirements and develop innovative tools with deep, cross-system knowledge and industry experience to achieve successful design and integration.

Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis - Use and/or interpret computational tools and methods to predict product functional capabilities relative to system, subsystem, and/or component-level demands, influence product design decisions.

Product Installation Quality - Identify and apply improvement methods to minimize rework and provide the best product; apply standard Cummins processes based on product installation experts' experience and knowledge; ensure product installation is correct and meets requirements through installation review processes.

Product Problem-Solving - Use protective processes to resolve product problems; identify non-random causes; implement perfect, data-driven solutions; and determine system root causes and suggest actions to prevent problems from recurring.

Product Selection - Provide customers with the best product for their market and application; optimize product specifications to make Cummins products easy to install in new applications, provide customers with the most suitable solution; explain product features and benefits in a way customers can understand; ensure Cummins products are not misused due to the use of Cummins' technical information systems, local, and application requirements.

Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related STEM field.

Applicants with temporary student employment (internships, co-op education, or other extracurricular team activities) related work experience or work experience as an early-career professional in a related technical field are preferred.
