Application Engineer

This entry-level/early-career professional, dual customer/product-focused position serves as the technical liaison between OEMs and represents our customers during new product development programs.

Applying Cummins products to customer vehicles requires the development of technical specifications, implementing new design configurations, and delivering high-performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customers' products in various applications.

Integrating high-quality and optimized customer solutions requires interaction with sales and marketing teams.

• Investigate integration and installation issues, understand cause-and-effect mechanisms, and propose appropriate measures.
• Develop and implement process improvements (e.g., installation quality assurance, OEM integration, and product selection) and support tools (e.g., Advisor, Cummins Online Specifications (COLS), and Global Customer Engineering (GCE)).
• Consult with subject matter experts and Value Package Introduction (VPI) teams, provide product data and installation requirements to application engineers and OEMs, and make decisions on product selection, design, and integration affecting OEM machine performance, optimization, and quality.
• Establish good working relationships with customers' technical departments, serving as their primary liaison, providing product technical information, managing product specifications, conveying product changes, developing installation problem-solving solutions, and promoting customer satisfaction.
• Support product selection and device design for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) using in-depth product, application, and market knowledge.
• Translate customer requirements and concerns into product functional requirements.
• Act as an internal customer/market supporter during new product development programs, design reviews, and product change request processes.
• Ensure correct product application and installation to meet customer system requirements and environment.
• Verify prototype machine performance to ensure installation quality and adherence to Cummins specifications.
• Develop problem-solving solutions for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services as experience is gained on the job.
• Independently execute established workflows and systems, develop technical or product knowledge, and participate in system and process improvements.
• Participate in basic direct personnel management but may coordinate and guide technical personnel and/or temporary student workers.
• Promote team goals, produce influence within the workgroup, and continuously improve skills essential for success in the position.

• Human-Machine Optimization - Combine disparate components or subsystems into a cohesive whole to achieve the customer's desired outcome; apply Cummins' installation requirements using our standard tools, processes, and best practices to ensure optimized performance, reliability, cost, and quality; use validated problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques to analyze technical issues and resolve them quickly.
• Machine Operation and Support - Monitor system performance, resolve system failures or performance issues, respond to changing user demands and technical changes, evaluate user system operation, and actively respond to operational issues impacting user satisfaction and operational cost management.
• Product Application Support - Ensure timely development and management of accurate and complete technical content to support our customers and business; manage technical system support for all markets to provide new choices; determine installation requirements and develop innovative tools with deep, cross-system knowledge and industry experience to achieve successful design and integration.
• Product Functional Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis - Use and/or interpret computational tools and methods to predict product functional capability relative to system, subsystem, and/or part-level demands, influence product design decisions.
• Product Installation Quality - Identify and apply human-machine optimization methods to minimize rework and provide the best product; apply standard Cummins processes using product installation experts' experience and knowledge; ensure product installation is correct and meets requirements through installation review processes.
• Product Problem-Solving - Use protective processes to resolve product problems; determine non-random causes; implement data-driven solutions; and identify system root causes and recommend actions to prevent problems from recurring.
• Product Selection - Provide customers with the best product suited to their market and application; optimize product specifications to make Cummins products easy to install in new applications, providing customers with the most suitable solution; explain product features and benefits in a customer-friendly manner; ensure Cummins products are not misused due to technical information system, local, and application requirements.
• Technical Customer Management - Serve as the interface for all technical factors, representing Cummins to customers; provide engineering data, files, and training to support device design and integration; use our change processes and communicate regularly with product development departments and customers to ensure customer business is not interrupted due to managing Cummins product changes.

• System Requirements Engineering - Convert stakeholders' requirements into verifiable development design using appropriate methods and tools; determine acceptance standards through analysis, assignment, and negotiation involving system acceptance; track requirement status throughout the system lifecycle; evaluate the impact of system requirement changes on project scope, schedule, and resources; create and maintain information related to associated work items.
• Systems Thinking - Define systems by drawing boundaries, identifying environmental context, interfaces, and lifecycles; help plan problem statements, scope, and deliverables by analyzing the relationships and interactions between system components; understand systems, predict behavior, and propose improvements to achieve desired effects.
